In this blog by AICRYPTTECH, I’ve shared details about how to set up Google Analytics and link it to your website/ app. This blog shares information about what is Google Analytics, how we track data and how linking is done. First, I’d like to give you a summary of Google Analytics and how it works.
Google Analytics helps you understand your online customers. This tool will allow you to analyze, track, report on-site visits, marketing goals, and ad revenue generated from your site. Google Analytics helps you track the customers’ journey and measure the success of your campaigns based on Goals and KPIs, which will help to optimize the campaigns for better results.
Additionally, in analytics, the first two concepts you’ll hear most of the time are metrics and dimensions. To be more technical, I’ve stated the meaning of metrics and dimensions:
Metrics are the quantitative numbers that measure data in counts, ratios, percentages, and the like.
Dimensions are the qualitative categories that describe the data in segments or breakouts.
To know how to install Google Analytics and interpret what our reports are showing us, it’s essential to first talk at a very high level about how Google Analytics works. To retrieve data from users who visited your site, two pieces of information are a must.
First, the users must allow Google Analytics to set the first-party cookies, identifying the unique users who visited the web page.
These cookies will help us gather the data of users who visited the site, such as users’ IP addresses, device type, page viewed, etc. Now, if the users decide to block the cookies from their browser, then Analytics won’t track the actions performed on the website, and tracking won’t work for those users.
Second, copy the JavaScript tracking code, also known as a global site tag, to your sites, so when a user visits the webpage, the tag fires and analytics report the required data.
Once you log in, add the required details, accept the permissions, and complete the Analytics account.
Note: We can create a maximum of 100 Google Analytics account from one Google email.
Once created, we need to create a Google Analytics property, a data collection point in Analytics for your site or App, and this Property represents your website or App.
- Navigate to the Admin section by clicking on the Gear icon if you’re on a different Google Analytics UI area or if you want to create a new property. (note: If you’re creating a new Google analytics account the user is immediately redirected to create a property.)
- Click on create Property.
- Select Web, App, Web/App beta, and click continue.
Note: Only 50 properties per account.
To create a property for your website, please follow the below steps:
- Click on create Property.
- Select Web and click continue
- Add website name, website URL, Industry category, select the correct Reporting zone, and click-create
Where to find the tracking code once the property is created:
Create a google analytics property for your App, a data collection point in Analytics for your IOS or Android App, and this Property will represent your App:
- Click on create Property.
- Select App and click continue
- Add Property name, Industry category, select the correct Reporting zone, select the currency, and click create.
Once created, analytics redirects to the data stream section. The below details will be available with the app developer in case of any questions you can always check with the app developer. Please follow the below steps:
- Select IOS or Android
- Add the app details package name, App name.
- Provision and Configure Google Cloud project
- Download config file
- Add Firebase SDK
- Run your App to verify the installation
Once created, analytics redirects to the Tracking code info section, and you’ll receive a unique tracking code. This code will help track data for every visit on your website once implemented on every page of your site, with no exceptions by the webmaster/developer.
If you’re using WordPress hosting (https://wordpress.com), you need to add the Google analytics tracking Id in WordPress UI so that Analytics will start passing the data. Here’s a help center article for your reference.
After the creation of Property and implementing the code, please create a view. Google Analytics’ views let you create filtered perspectives of your data. To create a view for please follow the below steps:
Note: Only 25 Views per Property
- Click on create View.
- Select Website, App, name the View (for example Blog page), select the correct Reporting zone and click continue
- Add Property name, Industry category, select the correct Reporting zone, select the currency, and click create.
Now, click on View settings, add the website URL you’d like to track, and the additional required details, and now you’re all set and ready to follow your user’s journey on your website/App.
